I saw this film on 28th December at Stratford Picture House
This was a surprisingly enjoyable and well done film. Not only did I not want to look at my watch once but I would probably enjoy the film as much if I saw it again.
The presentation of Holmes' character was an interesting interpretation but fitted quite well with what we have previously been shown of him. The bangs, fires and explosions struck me as rather overdone, although that is the current fashion. Irene was shown as being rather young but I do not remember if Conan Doyle told us how old she was supposed to be. Tower Bridge, shown almost continually and in the process of construction made a good finale but I wish they could they have found a way of either getting there more realistically or more slowly, it is after all quite a way from Westminster.
This Monday afternoon performance at Stratford was well attended.

The Habit of Art
I saw this performance on 19 December at the National Theatre Olivier.
I thoroughly enjoyed this production and I have been trying to work out why. I had almost no knowledge of Auden and Britten before I saw the play and not a great deal more about either afterwards. Alan Bennett makes me a spectator of a world I half know and shows me what is as real to me as a house across the road. In earlier plays I saw people eating in Betty's Cafe from the top of the 46 trolley bus in Tyrrel Street. Hector's school was not mine, but was clearly another Grammar School a mile or two down the road. Auden's Oxford was not the one I experienced but I know that is how many had been in other colleges. Go and see it.

This was a very enjoyable film. The storyline was simple and easy to follow. The baddies were predictably bad. There were a few unexpectedly good goodies. The hero was heroic and the ending was reassuring. Although very long I did not find myself either falling asleep nor wanting to look at my watch.
The 3D and computer anmation were well done and for the most part made me feel part of the film rather than having the feeling that the film was being inflicted upon me by overdone or in-your-face special effects.
This preview was the best attended showing I have ever seen at Stratford with hardly any empty seats. A small group of people left with noisy comments about thirty minutes before the end; I'm not quite sure why, perhaps because their supplies of popcorn and cola had run out.

Law Abiding Citizen
I saw this film on 7th December at Stratford Picture House
The blurb for this says "Contains strong bloody violence, torture and sexual violence"; so as I am a bit squeamish I was not sure if it was for me. I was wrong: this is a great film. It starts off with extreme violence (although they don't show the most horrific act) followed soon after by more extremely nasty action. The rest of the film is a how-did-he-do-it with violence that was appropriate to the plot and (nearly always) took me by surprise. If you cannot stand violence then avoid, otherwise grimace and bear it. Jamie Foxx and Gerald Butler as the two leading actors were superb, especially the psycopathic Clyde (Gerard Butler).
For a Monday showing this was a surprisingly well-attended performance, Unfortunately many were latecomers who made almost as much noise eating and slurping as they did chatting and making comments about the action on screen.

Paranormal Activity
I saw this film on 30th November at Stratford Picture House
This film has a cast of five but only two appear for more than a few minutes. The action at times seemed more like Big Brother before breakfast than a horror story, an impression helped by the low quality 24-hour camera footage. The real action when it came was not quite worth waiting for. I found neither main character convincing, surprisingly the male character was more so: geekish and techie obssessed, he is a fool who does not appreciate what he might be dealing with nor how dangerous it might be. She on the other hand, appreciates all of this from the beginning but goes along with his daft approach. The only sensible one is the cowardly ghost expert.
Unusually the film had no closing credits.
For a weekday matinee the performance was surprisingly well attended by a largely well-behaved audience but with quite a lot of nervous giggling.

Mother Courage and Her Children
I saw this performance on 28 November at the National Theatre Olivier.
An absolutely superb performance, marred only by one thing: the theatre was absolutely freezing with members of the audience shivering and putting on overcoats.
At one point we were treated to a welcome blast of hot air from an on-stage flamethrower, only once unfortunately.
That aside, Fiona Shaw as Mother Courage gave an astounding performance; Duke Special's music was perfect. The stage set was superb and gave the impression of a real war taking place.
But please National Theatre management, put the heating on!

Harry Brown
I saw this film on 23rd November at Stratford Picture House
What an excellent film. For the first fifteen minutes I thought this was going to be a depressing, look-at-the-dregs-of-society semi documentary. Then everything that had happened was pulled together in a very tight and consistent plot. All the characters were convincing. Michael Caine was superb and Emily Mortimer was a very believable detective inspector.
The performance in Stratford was not well attended although I got the impression several of the audience modelled themslves on the on-screen characters.

The Men Who Stare at Goats
I saw this film on 11th November at Stratford Picture House
The reviews of this have not been good but I thoroughly enjoyed it. For anyone who remembers the 1970s and onwards the basic story behind this is quite believable although what is shown as happened is less so.
For an early evening mid-week performance in Stratford the performance was quite well attended.

The Fourth Kind
I saw this film on 9th November at Stratford Picture House
An odd juxtoposition of supposedly original footage and real-life characters with the actors representing them. Many of the important characters still alive refused to take part in the film which surprises me not a lot. I am rather glad there is no other place like Nome (their moto!). The alien theory was almost convincing for me until the revelation of what had really happened to the dead husband. The film also provides an unfortunate if insensitive and possibly unintentional explanation of what might have happened to some of the children who have disappeared without trace in recent years, although I have not yet seen any press mention of owl sightings.

Rambert Dance Company - Insight Matinee
I saw this performance on 7th November
at Sadlers Wells Theatre
This was a cut down performance with only two rather than three pieces. It was aimed at a family audience and children with many explanations before and between performances. The speakers were Mark Baldwin Rambert's Musical Director, composer Julian Anderson and Professor Nicola Clayton a Cambridge University bird expert.
For the ballets themselves Comedy of Change came first. I found this more enjoyable the second time, although I still prefer to have more melody and less ping-plong-plink in music. The second piece, Carnival of the Animals with music by Saint-Saens was superb.
This Insight Matinee was thoroughly enjoyable for this middle-aged adult and I look forward to another one.

Prick Up Your Ears
I saw this performance on 6th November
at the Comedy Theatre
The original lead in this production was Matt Lucas but after he pulled out Con O’Neill replaced him. I did not see Lucas but O’Neill's portrayal of Kenneth Halliwell was superb.
It is a great shame that the play will be closing early, but not very surprising considering how many were in the audience. The theatre was less than half full.

I saw this performance on 4th November
at Sadlers Wells Theatre
The pre-performance talk was fascinating with a Q&A session involving Mark Baldwin Rambert's Musical Director, composer Julian Anderson and Professor Nicola Clayton a Cambridge University bird expert.
For the ballets themselves:
My favourite piece was Tread Softly using music by Schubert
The Carnival of the Animals with music by Saint-Saens was very enjoyble
But Comedy of Change with music by Julian Anderson I found less of a treat. The music having more plink and plonk than melody.
All together a very enjoyable evening

An Education
I saw this film on 31st October at Cineworld West India Quay
An entertaining film. Very believable characters, not just the heroine but naivete of the whole family made them easy targets for the film's main villain. It's a shame it had the usual cliches of what it took to get into Oxford.

Othello
I saw this performance on 24th October
at Trafalgar Studios
Lenny Henry was the big draw for this Othello and he was brlliant. He made the flawed military genius come to life. But for me the best performance was Conrad Nelson's Iago. I almost felt I could through his eyes see his monstrous scheme unfolding and his portrayal of how pure evil manifested itself made me feel cold. But the whole cast was brilliant. This was an excellent production.

A semi documentary on how the credit crunch happened. Surprisingly entertaining and just the right length.

Julie and Julia
I saw this preview on 24th September 2009 at the Sony Centre in Soho.
I suppose there was some point to this but I didn't see it.
Julie, a young, bored American wife who worked in a call centre sets herself a project of cooking every dish in a cookery book. The cookery book was written by an earlier bored American, the wife of a sort of diplomat living in France. This latter day pointless activity takes over Julie's life.
Julie (Amy Adms) was tedious and irritating, Julia (Meryl Streep) was vaguely amusing although Paul (Stanley Tucci) her diplomat husband was excellent. There were references to the McCarthy persecutions and their effects on Paul but these were barely explored and the limit of the film's meaningful content.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service
I saw this film on 28th June at Stratford Picture House
This was last in the short Bond series shown on Sunday afternoons in Stratford. I thought George Lazenby was actually a very good Bond but unlike all the other Bond films I left the cinema feeling rather down after the tragic ending. OK, truer to the book perhaps, but that has not bothered them before and as Lazenby said earlier in the film "This never happened to the other feller".

Red Cliffe
I saw this film on 19th June
at Genesis Mile End
This was the first time I had been to the Genesis. It's a multi-screen setup on the Mile End Road in east London. The original cinema was revamped to this format a few years ago, so it's good that it has survived. But why don't the people who create these places provide some shelter and seating for people who are waiting for their companions? At least it was not raining but waiting outside on a noisy, busy main road is not the best start for a visit.
As for the film itself, I had not done my research properly and had assumed it would be dubbed so did not realise until after the start that it was going to be entirely in Chinese with English sub-titles. I don't generally like sub-titles, especially where I do not even have a smattering of the spoken language but the film was excellent. The cast was enormous, the size used in Hollywood epics when extras were cheap. The story was very well told and although fairly complex was easy to follow.
The film was thoroughly enjoyable.

From Russia with Love
I saw this film on 14th June at Stratford Picture House
The Stratford Picture House is running a short Bond season on Sundays. Unfortunately I missed the first in the series, but never mind. From Russia with Love is the second and does not have the same class of extreme villain mastermind as Dr No or the later Goldfinger and Blofeld. Rosa Klebb was the sort of character the KGB was supposed to be full of, not meglomaniac, genius, mad, rule-the-world types but pure nastiness, ambition and spite. It's a very enjoyable film though and was a very pleasant way of spending a Sunday afternoon.
